When you think about the true stars of today’s kindie music scene, what are the names that can easily be tossed out there? Laurie Berkner, Dan Zanes, Ralph’s World, They Might Be Giants (debate amongst yourselves if the Disney label disqualifies them from ‘kindie’ status). Anyone else? Justin Roberts, I believe, has joined that group this year and the one other artist that many (myself included) would predict to be more-than-ready to explode onto the national stage in 2010 is Secret Agent 23 Skidoo.
The Asheville, NC kid-hopper seems bound for big things thanks to his obvious skill crafting thought-provoking and positive-but-never-cheesy hip hop anthems for kids, on-stage charisma to spare and, frankly, the gaping hole in this specific sub-genre of children’s entertainment. The amount of excitement generated and praise garnered has continued to mount since the 2009 national release of his debut album “Easy”. In a music scene awash with middle-aged white dudes & acoustic guitars (not that there’s anything wrong with that), 23 Skidoo’s arrival was greeted with backflips by some. And deservedly so. His is genuine hip-hop; meaning no giant teddy bear costume. He’s good. He’s fun. He’s not afraid to inject disparate musical influences from his region. He’s going to be freakin’ huge.
The new Secret Agent 23 Skidoo disc “Underground Playground” will be released on August 31st, but a pair of new videos are ready for consumption right now. Enjoy the sentimental “Chase the Rain” and fantastical “13 O’Clock” (and yeah, the glow-in-the-dark face pain kinda freaks me out a little bit too):
