Take the musicians behind Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings and Any Winehouse, and Khalil Jackson, Jorden Plaines, and Dallas Ifill – 3 MC-skilled 5th graders calling themselves 3 Titans – add higher learning/academia-based lyrics and you’ve got the brand new, just released single “College” w/ “Life of a Scholar” (Dunham Records).
I’m far from a hip hop scholar, but 3 Titans flow in a decidedly old-school fashion over top spacious, relaxed and funky beats laid down by the Menahan Street Band. I could definitely get accustomed to hearing precious kids rapping about wanting to go to college and working hard to make such a dream a reality. Let’s hope we hear more from this trio.
