At Home Alone With Narcos on Netflix

September is not a time for youthful Netflix viewing ’round these parts.

Instead of snuggling up on cool mornings beneath a fuzzy blanket with the adorable little Roku control in their hands, my daughters are busy falling into a scholastic rhythm which includes, among other things, the restart of nightly homework assignments, bleary-eyed early-A.M. flute practices, and after school showers to rinse the stink of pre-tweenhood from their persons.

Netflix Roku and Red Wings

In contrast, the end of summer for me at home alone has meant a lot of time under my Red Wings blanket, pressing the handy dandy Netflix button on the Roku for a lot of Netflix streaming as I try (and fail) to get back into a groove of writing, baking, soup making and napping with the cats. Okay, that last one I got down pat without issue.

First, I went through a Netflix humor binge with about 100 kilos worth of comedy specials from Demetri Martin, Jim Gaffigan, Aziz Ansari, Jen Kirkman, John Mulaney, Mike Birbiglia and the emotional roller coaster that is the Tig Notaro documentary. And now, making the most dramatic switch imaginable, I’ve moved on from laughs to cocaine with Narcos after hearing countless rave reviews from Men in Blazers’ Roger Bennett. The startling new series, which focuses on Pablo Escobar, the drug trade in Columbia and its impact on U.S. culture and health in the early 80’s, flew out of the gates with a remarkable piece of 1-hour television in episode one. I have no doubt things will get even better, if not bloodier.

Netflix Home Alone

My recent Netflix viewing activity with Narcos and 100 kilos of comedy.

After I binge the remaining nine Narcos episodes, I’m thinking about moving on to amazing movies I missed in theaters over the past few years AND rewatching some of my favorites from that same time period. Movies like:

  • Fruitvale Station with the impressive Michael B. Jordan.
  • Philomena with the hilarious Steve Coogan and always lovely Dame Judi Dench.
  • Chef for my love of the Cubano sandwich.
  • Nightcrawler because the performance by Jake Gyllenhall is one for the ages.
  • Good Will Hunting if can you believe, I’ve never seen it. Even with a gorgeous Elliott Smith soundtrack.
  • Frances Ha because Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig are geniuses.
  • Force Majeure for a big bite of cannibalism to get my creative juices flowing.
  • The Station Agent because it’s one of my all time faves and Patricia Clarkson can do no wrong.
  • What Happened Miss Simone? because how in the hell have I not watched this yet???

What are you streaming on Netflix now that the kids have gone back to school?
