Istvan & His Imaginary Band “What’s Mama Doin'”
Istvan doesn’t enter into his kid’s music career with trepidation. The Chicago indie rock veteran kicks things off with “What’s Mama Doin'”, an uptempo 93-second giggle fest about the most important people on Earth. My kids can barely appreciate the lyrics because there’s something about the song that causes them to laugh hysterically. Every. Single. Time.
Jangly country-rock guitar noodling adds a touch barroom rock-n-roll to the rat-a-tat-tat drums and the sticky start/top choruses. The result is a quick-hitting gem that you & your kids will eat up like candy.
Check out a clip of Istvan and his daughter singing “What’s Mama Doin'” live:
The 6-song EP “Things I Like” features many guest players, including killer organ licks from Pat Sansone of Wilco (on “Team Member“, the album’s 2nd best song). In addition to a ton of promise, his 1st half dozen kid’s tunes reveal Istvan as a full-grown child who still fancies some booger/potty/fart humor. Me likes!
Hopefully “What’s Mama Doin'” didn’t just set the table for “Things I Like”, but also for an extended run in the kindie genre.
Here’s a clip of Istvan discussing the making of “Things I Like”. This video is vital in appreciating “What’s Mama Doin'” and the rest of the EP for a couple reasons – #1, Istvan seems like an affable chap and that should matter when deciding what kid’s music is worthy of entering your home and #2 his daughter is positively adorable.
