2014 was a brilliant year for kids music. So many great kids albums were released, countless amazing kids songs spun, and hundreds upon hundreds of concerts were performed coast to coast by the best of the best in modern family music.
Philly local families will get a taste of all of that to start the new year as kids rock bands responsible for three of the top five albums on my best of 2014 list are coming to town in a single month, making January 2015 the ideal time to begin or renew your love affair with modern all-ages music.
The World Cafe Live in Philly will play host to a trio of the best touring indie kids bands, starting on Saturday, 1/3/15 at 11:30am when Morgan Taylor’s Gustafer Yellowgold experience makes his return to the venue. Expect hilariously-odd soft rock songs and original illustrated stories projected on stage.
About 7 years ago, a Gustafer Yellowgold show at World Cafe Live changed my life and the lives of my kids. We didn’t know it at the time, but that event was the catalyst for us diving headfirst into the amazing world of kindie music and I would love to know that Morgan’s whacky and wonderful music and illustrations might do the same for you and your family. Then, a week later on January 10 2015 at 11:00am, the mighty Okee Dokee Brothers will perform a set of morning music from their 2013 Grammy winning album Can You Canoe? and their 2015 Grammy nominated Through The Woods. If you dig introspective, story-based Americana music like the kind written and performed by The Avett Brothers and The Band, this is a show you won’t want to miss. The Okee Dokee boys are charming, wonderful and super talented.

Finally, the great pop-rock trio Recess Monkey come all the way from Seattle to dazzle and delight on January 24 2015 at 11:30am, with Beatles-inspired dance gems that will perfectly showcase the zany genius of modern kids music. If you listen to Sirius XM Kids Place Live, you already know one of the band members — afternoon DJ Jack Forman (from Live in the Monkey House!). The band will play songs from their extensive back catalog as well as new tunes from their terrific 2014 album Wired.
