Being a lover of all things indie, and a great friend to mom & pop shops in my community, I do not make a habit of stepping inside our local Wal-Mart. There have, however, been a couple of notable exceptions to this hard and fast rule of mine.
About 5 years ago I walked into Wal-Mart’s seasonal decorations department in search of Christmas wrapping paper. I had rummaged through the bins at every other store within a 5-mile radius and still couldn’t find paper that adequately expressed my mood during that particular Christmastime. This exhausting quest occurs annually, much to the frustration of my wife. Yeah, I’m a bit odd.
Skylanders then forced my hand, and I went into Wal-Mart several times looking for exclusive characters and variant figures to feed my kids addiction. Remember that Hex was originally a Wal-Mart exclusive. And we love us some Hex!
And now, it is time to return to Wal-Mart, because .
Father’s Day isn’t really a thing for me, but the kids are into it and who am I to shun their affection? In addition to the gifts I wouldn’t mind receiving on the invented holiday, I’d also enjoy a nice get-dressed-up meal out, maybe at Olive Branch in West Chester, giving me a break from the hot kitchen and the dirty dishes. And because I love watching the girls get excited about the prospect of dressing up all fancy-like for din-din! I’d also like to celebrate a Red Wings Stanley Cup victory. Oh wait, there’s been a small snag in that plan. 🙁
Short of a great family dinner at a locally-owned independent restaurant, a billion and a half snuggles, and a Stanley Cup parade that won’t be happening, there might not be a better way to kick off Father’s Day weekend than being one of the first people on Earth to watch our humble planet be saved by Superman. The thing is, I am not sure my girls are ready for this movie. Their entry point into the DC Universe was through Tiny Titans comics and, well, I’ve seen the emotion-stirring previews for Man of Steel, and The League of Just Us Cows are nowhere to be found. They’ve seen the original Chris Reeve Clark Kent and got through it without covering their eyes too often, but the 2013 version in a loud theater? Yeah, no.
Still, if I can be a superhero and secure kid coverage for the pre-screening on Thursday June 13 at 7 PM, the Mrs and I will gladly march into Wal-Mart, head straight for the electronics department and, after taking a quick peek at the Skylanders section, buy our Man of Steel Premier Night Screening tickets and, for a one night, be two of the hippest cats in the country. Hey, we don’t get that chance very often!
When we buy our tickets and take advantage of this groundbreaking offer from , the first of its kind, we’ll also get an exclusive digital comic book written my David S. Goyer, the author of Man of Steel, and have the chance to pre-order an HD digital download or Blu-Ray copy of the film (is that a thing now? Ordering the DVD before the movie even hits theaters? Because that seems very strange to me, but then again, I am not always with the ways of the modern world.)
Here’s How To Attend The Premiere Night Screening of Man of Steel.
