ABOUT: Woodmere Art Museum welcomes the start of the holiday season decorated in a Victorian theme as part of the Chestnut Hill Holiday House Tour, presented by the Chestnut Hill Community Association. Participants are invited to warm up at the Museum with eggnog, refreshments and festive holiday activities before the celebratory tree lighting ceremony on the museum’s front lawn. Woodmere’s event is free and open to the public and includes a card-making workshop, a live reading and Christmas carols. (Reservations for the Holiday House Tour at five area homes can be made through the Chestnut Hill Community Association at (215) 248-8810. Tickets are $35.)
A Victorian card-making workshop begins at 2 p.m. Actress Peg Bachmann will read excerpts from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol at 3:00 p.m. These programs are part of the Chestnut Hill Business Association’s partnership with the Philadelphia Free Library’s yearlong celebration of Dickens’ 200th birthday. At 3:30 p.m., the Philadelphia Girls Choir will entertain guests with Christmas carols until the tree lighting at 4:45 p.m.
Woodmere has also expanded its store for the holidays, featuring the work of local artists and craftspeople. “Give yourself the luxury of spending 30 minutes or more and let Stephen or Lori assist you in finding the perfect gift,” says Amy Ragsdale, a local silversmith and jeweler whose work is included in the store. “[It is] a thoughtful way to support the museum, the community, local artists and give a gift that is genuinely unique and has lasting value.”
