A Big Day for Little Kids

April 20, 2010.  I’d have to say it was a good day.

This fine sunny (at least in my neck o’ the woods) Tuesday started with Amberly Warnke of Ages 3 and Up radio upping the ante on the kid’s radio game by announcing the arrival of Pied Piper Radio, a family radio program available for syndication nationwide (through PRX, Public Radio Exchange).  It’s a big, impressive move for the genre in both accessibility and, eventually, acceptance.  Pied Piper is a true family radio hour, with songs culled from all genres and generations.  I encourage you to encourage your local public, community and college radio stations to pick up the program.  Of her new radio show, Warnke says “there really is more out there for kids than what you see advertised on television, and I’m glad that I am able to help other parents find it”.  With that kind of mission statement, it’s probably real obvious that I’m already a huge fan of what Amberly Warnke is trying to accomplish with Pied Piper Radio.

The day has closed with a major announcement from another kid’s radio magnate, but, oddly enough, completely unrelated to his radio machine.  Bill Childs of Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child has launched a record label (aptly named Spare the Rock Records) to release the Dean Jones compiled and produced MANY HANDS: FAMILY MUSIC FOR HAITI, a benefit CD featuring new, previously unreleased tracks from some of the biggest names in family music.  Who you ask?  How about Pete Seeger, Dan Zanes, Frances England, They Might Be Giants, Recess Monkey, Elizabeth Mitchell, Uncle Rock, Gustafer Yellowgold, 23 Skidoo, Rani Arbo & Daisy Mayhem, Deedle Deedle Dees, Randy Kaplan and many, many more.  It’s an insane collection of talent, all conspiring to help a worthy cause.  Way more info on the Many Hand benefit CD here.

Wow, what a day.  What will tomorrow bring?
