Just let go of the cruel effects of salt water on nuts and bolts

The first thing you notice, after alternating between frigid blasts of conditioned air in the main lobby and elevator vestibule, and stumbling around with foggy glasses courtesy of a courtyard flooded with sunlight and humidity, and outdoor motel-style hallways connecting the guest rooms, is the view; a cool million if it’s worth a buck.

My view from the 5th floor of the Jaracanda building looked out over the Gulf of Mexico but also over orderly rows of royal blue beach cabana rooftops, a three story inflatable waterside, empty hammocks swaying in the breeze between wood posts, and a pair of red brick walkways dusted with sand on either side of a narrow moat where paddleboats claim exclusive dominion.

The next thing you’ll notice is the weathering of the room; metal hinges flecked with rust and white wooden shutters worn like a wedding dress carelessly left hanging in the back of the closet.

Even the most grandiose of palaces suffer the years and wear the effect of salt water that wafts incessantly through the air while not caring a lick about tax brackets or bank account balances or the brand and model of car you valet parked.

We see the sea and we effortlessly look right past life’s many imperfections.

A little wear and tear is part of every deal we have no choice but to make; this we’ve learned to understand and accept over time.

It is the deal with buildings, with rooms costing a few hundred a night, and with the fixtures and nuts and bolts and sliding doors and coats of paint and once pristine white shutters found within those rooms.

It too is part of the deal with people. We show signs of the wind, salt, and water as we try to stand strong for decades in the face of the elements.

We have a harder time looking beyond the rust we wear.

Even the most palatial of lives lived get weathered down eventually.

That’s the deal.

There is however an antidote, a serum to keep us looking out onto a crystal clear horizon.

It’s the sound of children laughing at the whack of pool noodles, of giggles rising up to greet us as paddleboats are steered into the fringes of the flora planted along the river, of manic attempts to lick the salted caramel ice cream faster than the Fahrenheit can melt it, and of forks quietly piercing pan seared scallops, blackened local grouper, and the most tender fried calamari that’ll ever pass through your parted lips curved north to smile while you eat.

There are ways, and places we can go, to once again see only the beauty, hear only the joy, and feel only the warmth.

Tradewinds Resort shows its age and its proximity to the salt water air but this luxurious place on St. Pete Beach in Florida offers more than enough of a counterbalance to the aging process.

Tradewinds is a resort where you are encouraged to just let go; it’s a place where you can be young again.
