I published a sprawling ‘reasons I love soccer‘ story already but there are so many reasons, some tiny and obscure, some massive and obvious, why I absolutely love soccer / English football so this is going to be a series.
Here’s reason #2 Why I Love Soccer.
America is descending into darkness and while soccer across the globe is plagued by many of the same issues destroying our country (greed, racism, homophobia, sexual harassment, lack of equal pay/opportunity), there’s also this:
My favorite soccer players, the guys I cheer for every single week for just about 52 weeks every year (the sport’s calendar is pretty much nonstop), are from:
- Senegal
- Egypt
- Morocco
- Italy
- England
- Argentina
- Spain
- Denmark
- Croatia
- Wales
- Mexico
- Chile
- Germany
- Belgium
- Jamaica
And my girls are watching a lot of matches with me.
My girls see me cheering for guys with all different skin colors, with all different kinds of names.
And none of that matters.
But all of that kind of matters, ya know.
