Last week I was casually flipping around during a commercial break of some sporting event when I happened upon WHYY (my local PBS station). This is a somewhat common occurrence thanks to it’s proximity to the ESPN suite of channels, that and the TBS/TNT/CW package in between couldn’t be more uninteresting to me. Such flipping is how I discovered Inspector Lewis on Masterpiece Mystery! This time it was music that caught my eye (and ear).
Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul & Mary) was on stage with Mary Chapin Carpenter, Bethany & Rufus, the dapper Keb’ Mo’, and kindie bang-on-a-can artist Billy Jonas (among many others). I wound up abandoning my college basketball contest and staying with the Peter Yarrow Sing Along Special.
Check your local PBS listings for when the special is airing. It’s worth your time, or at least your DVR’s, to hear Yarrow & Keb’ Mo’ on “Polly Wolly Doodle”, Bethany & Rufus w/ Yarrow on the electrifying “All Hid”, and the whole cast on the meditative “Blowin’ in the Wind” (video below) and “This Little Light of Mine”.
