A modern children’s Halloween/Autumn classic has found it’s way to the iPhone. Yep, that brave square squash has got his own app.
Oceanhouse Media, the developer behind many of the best-selling kiddie eBook applications on the iTunes Store (numerous Dr. Seuss and Berenstain Bears titles), has just brought Joe Troiano’s The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin to your iPhone and iPad.
We enjoy the Read To Me feature the most, mostly because of the super cool Vincent Price-esque narration. The gravity of the narrator voice lends an air of spooky to Spookley and the results are outstanding. In addition to listening to the story or reading it themselves, kids can touch various characters – the bat, Spookley and the other pumpkins, a scarecrow, etc – and hear bonus content not in the actual book.
Because the don’t-judge-a-book-by-it’s-cover message doesn’t overwhelm the tale, we’ve been big Spookley fans here in the OWTK household for a number of years. This app is another way to digest the fun story.
At the time of this review, The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin app is on sale for a mere 99-cents. Get it here (for either iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch or all 3 – only 1 purchase required).
