The passing of time is marked in any number of ways; notches on a door frame, the size of shoes in the doorway or by the bags of outgrown clothing waiting by the door to be donated to Cradles to Crayons (and later, to Goodwill, when your children eventually age out of the Cradles demographic) but this month, during shark week appropriately enough, I mark the advancing years of my two nieces with a pair of graduation gifts perfectly suited for shark week fanatics (of which my one niece, at least, is).
The Roku Streaming Stick was gifted to one niece so that TV and movies might be watched in a southern dorm room after a day of classes, paper writing and test studying is complete. Maybe she’ll tap the Netflix button and be guided quickly to a new season of Orange is the New Black or maybe the Amazon Instant Video button is more her style because she wants to revisit the first season of Grimm or finally get into Orphan Black. Either way, with Roku my niece can access TV, movies, music, sports and so much more without being saddled with a silly cable bill. As far as practical and modern graduation gifts go, it’s hard to top a Roku Streaming Stick.
My shark-loving niece is getting an incredibly cool shark blanket from Blankie Tails that will accompany her to college so that when her roommate cranks up the a/c, she can crawl into the mouth of a friendly plush shark, drift off watching shark week reruns, and dream of the important marine biology work she’ll someday do after graduation in 4 years time.
I have loved watching my nieces grow up into outstandingly bright, socially aware and forward-thinking young adults. As each prepare to put their own unique stamp on the world, I hope these simple but thoughtful graduation gifts from my family make them smile and occasionally think of us while far away at university, snuggled up inside a shark and/or watching a great movie with Roku.
