I’ve had many chances to take the mic, but successfully managed to avoid singing karaoke for 40 years. Now, I’m a karaoke virgin no more because in front of a tight live band in San Diego at the end of February, I sang a song and lost my karaoke virginity.
It was glorious and so with help from some friends I went back for sloppy seconds an hour later.
They say you’ll always remember your first and I assume that’s true of singing karaoke too. I sang Weezer’s “Say It Ain’t So” at the official launch event for the 2017 Kia Sportage, fronting an experienced live band, and while I maybe was a tad too ‘into it’ by karaoke standards, I think the song and the mood was fitting for me — eyes closed, screaming my heart out, passionate for my newest favorite hobby. I went on 3rd that night and could’ve used the crowd to be a bit more drunk!
With one notch on my bedpost, it was time to put on a wig and have some fun with friends singing The Ramones “I Wanna Be Sedated”. I don’t know when I’ll sing karaoke again but I doubt it will be as memorable (or photogenic) as my firs time.
