Nine years ago this spring, on a snowy Saturday morning, we three ducked into a suburban Philadelphia theater after a brunch with my folks. The occasion deserved a photo, and here it is, although I haven’t a clue who took it. Selfie sticks weren’t invented yet, not that I’d be caught dead using one in the past, present or future. I do know, however, that I’ve lost a ton of weight over the past 113 months and for that reason I’m pretty pleased with myself for having the idea to start this story off here, and to go successfully hunt down this old photograph.
The little girl in that oversized pink and white jacket was about to enjoy her first movie theater experience, a G Rated (what ever happened to G rated movies??) 2nd birthday celebration with Curious George, her mom and dad, and a man with the yellow hat who still thinks it’s a good idea to leave his precocious monkey alone damn near every day. When will he ever learn?
Curious George’s 3rd movie, Back to the Jungle, premieres on PBS KIDS tomorrow August 17th, on small screens and on digital devices that were barely a pipe dream years ago. This is the same day that smiling child up there will walk into her 6th grade classroom for the first time. She still loves the curious monkey and being held (although that’s become a bit more physically challenging for mom and dad) but despises the color pink, which she sorta did back then too but the coat was precious and we were able and willing to exert more dominance over her wardrobe choices.
Be sure to tune in or DVR CURIOUS GEORGE 3: BACK TO THE JUNGLE tomorrow, Monday August 17th 2015. The new movie, which starts in space before crashing into the bush, features the voices of Angela Bassett and John Goodman, and music by the Plain White T’s. If you’re feeling especially snuggly tomorrow, stay comfy and enjoy CURIOUS GEORGE 2: FOLLOW THAT MONKEY immediately following the new flick.
If you miss it on Monday, fear not, CURIOUS GEORGE 3: BACK TO THE JUNGLE will also air on August 19, 21, 22, and 23 on PBS KIDS (check local listings).
While my girls will already be back to school, you can still get your kiddos ready with rad school supplies from PBS KIDS at Whole Foods Markets. Check out the great PBS KIDS robot, butterfly and puppy dog folders, reusable snack bags, pencil cases, and lunch bags on sale now at Whole Foods.
