Dan Storper

Putumayo and Putumayo Kids CDs are available in over 3000 stores in the U.S. alone! Who says physical CD sales are going the way of the dinosaur?! Putumayo’s newest collection for their kid’s imprint, American Playground, features many OWTK faves including Randy Kaplan, Elizabeth Mitchell and Johnny Bregar, and was released last week.

What is your all-time favorite film?

It’s a tough choice between Casablanca and To Kill a Mockingbird, which I’d pick. The powerful story about a small town lawyer in the South standing up against bigotry. The kids, especially Scout, who is one of the most adorable and admirable children in the history of cinema. Incredible acting by Gregory Peck, a remarkable adaptation of Harper Lee’s great book by Horton Foote and wonderful direction by Robert Mulligan. It all came together in this wonderful film.

What food do you like best when watching a movie?

Always popcorn. It’s amazing how much popcorn can vary. Shouldn’t be oversalted or too buttery. I like Paul Newman’s brand across the board including popcorn.

What all-ages/family movie coming out this summer are you most excited to see?

I’m always curious about modern adaptations of classic stories like the Lone Ranger. When I think about the simple stories and modern Hollywood films, though, I think there’s been an excessive rush to high-tech gimmickry.

The handsome lads of Recess Monkey are kindie rock superstars. In addition to the band, which has received about as much acclaim as a band can (hello! People Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, TIME, USA Today,) bassist Jack Forman is also the host of the afternoon/evening show on Sirius XM Kids Place Live. Recess Monkey’s new album Deep Sea Diver was released last week. Listen to my review of it below.

What is your all-time favorite film?

Jack Forman (bass, vocals): This is a tough call, but I think my pick is Back to the Future. There were three or four VHS tapes that I wore out as a kid (The Last Starfighter, Cloak and Dagger, Emmett Otter’s Jugband Christmas were also huge) but BTTF was the absolute cream of the crop. It had everything! And appealed to my elementary-aged car addiction: I can remember the sheer elation of seeing a DeLorean limping along somewhere in town, screaming “IT’S THE BACK TO THE FUTURE CAR!!!” It had adventure! Science Fiction! Burning tire tracks! Biff! Huey Lewis not only singing some of the greatest songs of the 80s on the sound track, but he even has a cameo!? ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? Christopher Lloyd was the same age in both times! Manure! Van Halen! It even had Crispen Glover! You can’t stop this movie.

Drew Holloway (guitar, vocals): This is so tough! I don’t have a favorite movie and to be honest, I’m not really a movie guy. Its hard for me to stay still for an hour or more. I will say that if Cannonball Run, The Bad News Bears or The Natural came on TV, I would cancel whatever plans I had and even watch through the commercials. These are all memorable movies from growing up. It’s probably the mix of sport, silly and mild cursing!

Korum Bischoff (drums): The Goonies. Everything about this movie is perfect, the adventure, the jokes, the Cyndi Lauper song… Just the right amount of funny, scary, and touching! My parents loved it, my wife loves it, my kids love it. I’ve even taken my older son to Mikey’s house in Astoria to do the “Truffle Shuffle!”

What food do you like best when watching a movie?

JF: Reeses Pieces. ‘Nuff said.

DH: If I’m chilling on the couch I’m usually good for a couple of bowls of cereal! At the movies, I’ll have some popcorn with lots of butter though my fave growing up was gummy bears.

KB: Peanut butter M&Ms.

What all-ages/family movie coming out this summer are you most excited to see?

JF: Not really, so I’ll just say “The One Direction 3D Concert Movie” to rile you up 🙂

DH: Isn’t there a new special edition of My Neighbor Totoro coming out? I haven’t seen Brave yet. I think I need to do some catch up before I see any summer 2013 flicks.

KB: This summer: Well, I was really excited for the new Superman movie but I hear it’s not all that kid-friendly. I guess maybe Monsters University but I have to check to see if Randall is in it because my kid has a wicked fear of that shifty lizard.
