I must admit, we are lucky. Even in my strip mall hell of a hometown, we have access to some terrific small businesses, especially toy stores. Within a 1/2 hour drive there’s always been Pun’s in Bryn Mawr, and a few Lucky Ducks scattered about too. Learning Express is a chain, technically, but has the vibe of a neighborhood spot, even though they moved into the mall mall, which is less attractive a destination spot for us. But super locally, like without a commitment and a couple gallons of gas, it’s been pretty much the usual big box suspects: Toys-r-Us, Target, you know the routine. Until now.
We welcomed Monkey Fish Toys to the community a couple months ago as the new suburban toy mecca (formerly Bull Market Toys in the strange Eagleview Town Center complex) held its official grand opening party for influential area bloggers. For some reason, they even let me in! The large space stocks all the best toys, from Melissa & Doug to LEGO, plus adorable Budkins and PlanToys, and then there’s the collectable stuff like Voltron and Masters of the Universe. I wouldn’t have been suprised to see a Q*bert lurking around.
Most excitingly, maybe, is the party room in the back of the long space. You now have a prime western suburb destination for a rad LEGO (or LEGO Friends) party, or maybe Star Wars? How about Polly Pocket or Princess (capital P or lowercase)? They have pre-planned ideas or you can work with them to customize something totally unique for your kid. This joint’s even got a coffee bar, sofa, and flat screen TV showing rad kid’s shows and movies!
I’d fancy seeing some of the younger DC comics for sale in there (Tiny Titans, Superman Family Adventures, and the forthcoming Lil’ Gotham) as well as some choice kindie music CDs. Hey, they know where to go to get the top picks in that field, right?
Aaaaaaanyway, Monkey Fish is having their for realsy GRAND OPENING celebration on Saturday May 18th. There are special grand opening party activities planned all day and hourly sales where you can score big discounts on Playmobil, LEGO City, LEGO Friends, and more.

12:00 – 2:30: Merrily the Clown – Face painting & balloon animals.
2:30 – 3:30: Hot Wheels race – Pick your car and if you win the race you keep the car!
3:30 – 4:30: Crafts with Megan – Make something to take home.
4:30 – 5:30: Come on over to the Dark Side and have your picture taken with Darth Vader.
