With two darling children and a chubby tabby cat around here, it is vitally important to me that we keep our in-home environment as safe as humanly possible. Call it ‘going green’ if you must. Frankly I think that phrase has been exploited by corporations looking to cash in on a movement. I call it common sense. ‘Tis simpler and will stand the test of time. If a bottle of X comes with an emergency response action plan should its contents come in even slight contact with your skin, then we’re gonna go right ahead and find bottle Y that is less frightening and that doesn’t require a hazmat suit, because those bulky ensembles do nothing to flatter my shape.
In the past, we’ve sought out locally-sourced cleaning products that are also environmentally smart and sustainable, because if you’ve got a choice that is financially sound, why not opt for the product that is less likely to harm you and your kids and your space and your planet, and also the one that is made by a company that genuinely seems to get it and care — and not solely about their profit margin and pleasing shareholders.
[climbing down from soapbox]
The Honest Company, based in Santa Monica CA, is a certified B Corporation and was founded to provide families with a reasonable alternative to the harmful stuff down the cleaning, diaper, and health & beauty aisles of grocery stores. One of the nastiest products we have in our homes is automatic dishwasher liquid. That stuff is loaded with chemicals and ingredients I can’t even come close to pronouncing. Honest offers a 40 oz bottle of safe, made in America dishwasher gel for a fair $5.95 (a price that gets cheaper when you bundle it together with more products.) Note that this particular product is not $8.95 or $10.95 or some obnoxious price point that leaves regular families on regular budgets in the dust, and makes them curse the whole of the ‘green’ industry, which looks greedier by the day. I appreciate that. $5.95 I can handle, it is only $1 or so more than the toxic alternative. And know that with every purchase, Honest is donating time, money, and products to the L.A.-based non-profit Baby2Baby.
I’ve used the body wash and the dish soap so far, and both are very nice on all the senses. And, maybe most importantly, they do their jobs. Because if the stuff didn’t get your dishes, clothes, and you clean, than it really wouldn’t matter how friendly it all was on the environment, ya know?
The Honest Company was started by a mom and a dad who, like many modern parents, were increasingly worried about products made with questionable chemical ingredients. But the alternatives they found were often expensive, inaccessible, bland, or ineffective. In response to this clear need for something better, they created The Honest Company to ensure that parents (or anyone for that matter!) could easily find natural and non-toxic eco-friendly products that are beautiful, effective, and affordable. From customized product bundles to diapers and wipes to an ever-expanding line of cleaning and personal care products, you can find everything you need at Honest.com and have it delivered directly to your front door.
