Quick Thoughts: A Back To School Realization

I’ve got two kids in school now and something has drastically changed: there are twice as many pieces of paper entering my home and taking up residence on our many flat surfaces.

Quick aside: I joked with a buddy once about how, if it were up to me, there would be nary a flat surface in the house. Everything would have at least a bit of a mound, an incline, a curve. This way, nothing could linger and nothing would collect dust. No toys, no crumbs, no clothes, no papers, and no wire hangers!!  Yes, they’d all fall to the ground which is, technically speaking, a flat surface, but that doesn’t bother me nearly as much.  Maybe because I’m so tall and therefore, far removed from the floor.

We’re talking about artwork, writing samples, in-class worksheets, teacher newsletters, permission slips, and school wide notifications. If you’ve got school-age kids, you know of what I speak. I barely kept my head above the papery water last year, with just the Bear bringing home volumes of the stuff. Now, there are two and, I have come to the realization, this means 2x the paperwork! Who knew?

I fantasize about a world where nothing but dirty lunch containers and a single thumb drive come home with each child and on that drive is all their work, the newsletters, writable .pdf permission slips, and other notes of note.

First-world problem, I get it. But a guy can dream, no?  In the meantime, while I wait for technology to meet my needs, I’ve got some furniture to bend.
