Jerry Rice & Nitus’ Dog Football for Wii
by Cooper McHatton
Intro/About: I was skeptical going into Jerry Rice & Nitus’ Dog Football. I mean, it’s a game called Jerry Rice & Nitus’ Dog Football! Just look at that cover. It’s flat-out ridiculous. However, once I popped the disc into my Wii I was very surprised to find an incredibly enjoyable family sports game.
An Insane Sport? Yep, when the player picks up the remote, they are going to be playing a virtual game of dog football. How does that work you ask? Well I’ll tell ya, it’s weird, but fun. Players take control of a human quarterback leading a team of K9 football players. C’mon, dogs can play QB? You choose the plays for the dogs to run, then hand the ball off to one of the pooches who then has to be led as far across the field as possible. This is done with mainly motion controls that work well and are easy to get into/pick-up and play. Players point their Wiimote at the screen to lead the dog(s) through the gridiron, which is actually a series of unusual arenas; beach, city, or glacier. And the fields are made up of curious things – slides, escalators, tubes – adding a unique twist to the game.
Crazy Fun Multiplayer: As to be expected for any game about the massively popular sport of dog football, the multiplayer mode is the star. I managed to play quite a few games with my dad and sister (having teams of one and two players) and we had a blast during them all. When there are two players on a team, the person in control of the menus and quarterback alternates while both players lead the dogs. I discovered that my father and younger sister can destroy me in a game of dog football. I never stood a chance.
Overall: Jerry Rice & Nitus’ Dog Football for the Wii is a rather silly family football game that is surprisingly well made. Players will have lots of fun yelling and laughing at their virtual puppies as they play high pressure games…of dog football. Writing that never fails to make me chuckle.
