This mix makes no sense – no thematic element connecting these 4 songs whatsoever. Still, quite awesome.
- Justin Townes Earle “What I Mean to You“ – It’s been weeks since I’ve been able to make it through a day without singing a portion of this tune. The Okee Dokee Brothers made the introduction and JTE himself sealed the deal on stage at the Newport Folk Fest this summer. I love this cat’s style, his songwriting, and his guitar playing. (note if watch the video below with kids: tune is safe, but there is a curse word in the intro. Skip to the 1-minute mark for the music only)
- MyNameIsJohnMichael “Elders” – This NOLA-based artist came highly recommended by Paste Magazine and Jeff Giles of Popdose/Dadnabbit. No album yet, but he/they give anyone with an expendable email address a pair of terrific songs for free, one of them being “Elders”. A little bit of Strokes-style percussion and clean electric guitar blended with some precious handclapping and a non-word sing-along chorus makes for a tasty summer cocktail.
- Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band “Pretty Princess“ – a request from my royal Mouse. A super addictive, sugary sweet ode to all things pink and pretty. Have your magic wands ready.
- Todd McHatton “Dana Wears Dresses” – a brand new song from the California kindie rocker’s ambitious, thickly layered, bizarre new album “Galactic Champions of Joy”. I love the lyric: “she’s never been in tune with what other kids are doin’ / she always wants to look her best”.
