THE DIGGITY DUDES “WHO’S THE LINE LEADER”
from the band’s 2010 album “My Science Project“
I don’t know of another song in the kid’s music oeuvre so explicitly about being either line leader or door holder, yet these are two absolutely crucial topics in the life of a 1st and 2nd grader. The Bear and I have had more conversations about which in-school task she prefers, who got in trouble and was no longer allowed to fulfill their duties, and why door holders in her 1st grade classroom have all the fun, than we have had about dinosaurs, giraffes, or tricycles combined! Yet there are endless kid’s songs about that triumvirate.
So kudos to The Diggity Dudes for exploring the anticipation of a teacher’s decision and the unbridled joy of being the one picked to serve proudly as line leader for the day.
The music on “Who’s The Line Leader” wins too, with a picked banjo, supple mandolin fills, soothing acoustic guitar, and a confident backbeat. Vocally, the Dudes’ two voices mesh perfectly in telling this simple story of want, expectation, and hope. Every school kid is gonna know these feelings well and should really enjoy this one. For frame of reference, think fellow southerners The Baby Grands in tone, tempo, and craftsmanship.
A young child’s entire school day can be made simply by being chosen to act as line leader or door holder. Few non-ice cream or superhero related things are capable of bringing as much joy to a 6, 7 or 8 year old. Thankfully, we’ve now got a song to celebrate this.
