Late last week, Funky Mama’s first musical “Moo Juice” opened in Olathe, Kansas. All shows are now sold out (!), and by the looks and sounds of this here clip from the show, the packed houses are in for quite a treat.

The idea to wrap your songs and live performance up into musical theater is an intriguing one. While I don’t know just how feasible a feat this is for the bulk of the kindie rock universe, a musical does provide a way to 1) capture a new audience, one that may not be inclined to venture out to a kiddie rock show, 2) present your talents in a more visual and long-lasting way to both new and existing fans, and 3) have a sort of residency in one particular place (a luxury in the travelin’ world of rock-n-roll).
The Pop Ups do something along these same lines, with their puppet musical PASTA! and Ralph Covert has done this in the past with his Nutty Nutcracker Christmas (although he was not in the show). I think Secret Agent 23 Skidoo could pull it off with stunning results, since so many of his dramatic, highly visual tunes could easily be transferred to the stage.
What other kid’s bands could/should venture into musical theater?
