The 2012 Zooglobble KidVid Tournament First Round – Game 1

OWTK Kindie Music News, Zooglobble KidVid Tournament — By on March 13, 2012 at 7:55 am

**UPDATE**
Billy Kelly was unable to pull off a BYU-caliber comeback last night, so the mighty Imagination Movers are moving on to the 2nd round! Come back to OWTK tomorrow for another exciting 1st round matchup.

Welcome to the Woody Guthrie region, folks, for this scintillating first round matchup.

I’m here with Yim Yance alongside and Russ Dodson at the jam-packed OWTK.com arena for what should be an intriguing contest of contrasting styles.  We have, from the upstart Central Pennsylvanian Mid-Atlantic East Coast Conference (CPMAECC), Billy Kelly with his red, white & blue nostalgia song “That Old American Flag” going up against the formidable Imagination Movers who make their triumphant return to the tourney after ditching the mighty Mouse Ears Conference for the newly formed Big 2 along with Ralph’s World, and hopefully someday, They Might Be Giants.

Please watch both videos then vote for your favorite below. Voting ends at 11:55pm ET/8:55 PT tonight so have at it right now, hoops kindie music lovers!

#3 Billy Kelly “That Old American Flag”

vs.
#6 Imagination Movers “Everybody Sing”

Wanna keep playing along today? Of course you do. Head over to Gooney Bird Kids right now for a 1st round game pitting Dog on Fleas’ brilliant speakeasy-era music video against Atlanta’s own The Baby Grands!

Keep up with the entire bracket at Zooglobble.com!

Where did the poll go? About 53k people interested in voting for the Imagination Movers didn’t get to. According to the post, polls were open less than four hours (disappeared at noon, instead of the advertised 11:55pm tonight). Help us participate in your poll. Please and thank you!

    Way to go Movers! Wee-ho!

  • Brandy D says:

We-Ho! Imagination Movers all the way! Go Mover Nation!

  • Victoria C. says:

Watched them both and even though I voted for the Imagination Movers because we listen to that song every day, the video concept for Billy Kelly’s was really cute!

  • Jeff says:

Hi Victoria, thanks so much for your honesty and for taking the time to watch both videos. I can only hope the other Movers’ fans see this as an easy peesy opportunity to discover some more great kid’s music. We are living in the Golden Age of Family Music but still it is often only the TV bands that get noticed by the masses. Here’s to hoping this little tournament changes that a bit. Cheers!

    Jeff

  • Elizabeth Davis says:

Respectfully, sir, the Movers play their own instruments, write their own music and direct their own videos. They are the ones who created the entire Imagination Movers concept start to finish… they are *not* a corporate creation! In fact, they are no longer with Disney. I give everyone a fair chance and well, I just didn’t care for the other video, even if was against another group or singer. Please, take the time to research the Imagination Movers by going to their Facebook page and website before labeling them *just another TV band*… there are several great articles in various publications about how the Movers got their start. These guys are the real deal.

  • Kim Raab says:

I have to second Elizabeth’s post. In our house, we don’t just listen to the Movers as we tend to listen to Kids Place Live in the car during drop off at daycares. Listening to that station has opened us up more than a contest ever could (absolutely adore The Not It’s among others). We discovered the Movers due to Disney as my son was just about a year old and just starting to act interested in music. Too be honest, I couldn’t stand their TV show but my husband convinced me to attend one of their concerts, not knowing what we were about to expect. What happened, we fell in love with their style, the way they interact with the children during the show and, if possible, after. The fact they are from New Orleans sealed the deal as we absolutely adore the city and it’s musical influence. My children enjoy listening to all types and styles of music and that is largely because of the Mover influence as their style crosses multiple genre.

  • Jeff says:

Elizabeth, why the anger? I have never once, online or offline, called the Movers a “corporate creation” nor have I ever labeled them “just another TV band”, but their time spent on the television has contributed greatly to their success off of it. There is no disputing my previous statement that “it is often only the TV bands that get noticed by the masses”. What capacity venues were they, or Kelly Clarkson, or any other act who was broken by a TV program playing before their time on the tube? Oh, and I know they are no longer on Disney’s record label, I made reference to that fact in this very post. I also don’t need to research the Movers, but thanks for the tip. I’ve been following and covering kid’s music for some time, and have posted several times about the Movers here on OWTK. I know and appreciate their roots. If I didn’t, I’d never write a single word about them. Whether you like Billy Kelly’s video or not is besides the point really, but thanks for being fair and watching both. There are dozens of terrific bands making music for children these days; that IS the point. I’d like to think this entire KidVid tournament is an opportunity for fans of band X and Z to discover bands A and B. Make sense?

  • Elizabeth Davis says:

I’m sorry if I came across as angry… there was no anger, nor malice intended. I was a little rushed. Have a great day and thanks for keeping such a great website up and running. (not easy, is it? :) )

  • Jeff says:

    Hey Kim,
Fantastic! Kids Place Live is an outstanding gateway to the best in modern kid’s music. Yeah, the Not-Its are super!

Thanks for stopping by OWTK today and for voting! The next KidVid tourney matchup I am hosting goes live on Thurs…be sure to stop back as I think you’ll have a rooting interest in that one too ;)

    All the best,
    Jeff

  • Kimberly says:

    Movers all the way!!!
I am a big Movers fan!!

  • Michelle B. says:

I watched both. Billy Kelly’s video was very well put together and touching. We need more patriots.

My vote went with the Movers, because our family loves them and wants to see more of them. My 7 year-old has been a fan since she was 3. Not many artists/shows, etc., have that kind of draw and can grow with a child, yet still be there for the current 3 year-olds. They have what it takes to hang around in the kid/family biz. Sure, they are recognizable from Disney, but it’s their pre- and post-Disney stuff that is most memorable and shows who they really are.

Best wishes to Billy with his future in this industry! :)

  • Christina says:

We are a Mover family so I was more inclined to simply vote for them, but the name of the other song really intrigued me. I listened to some of it, but it’s just really not my style. I listen mostly to alternative and hard rock myself and that’s what my children have grown up listening to. The Movers do a fantastic job of including many different genres of music. I love that they can create music that I actually enjoy listening to. I’m sure the other song is good, but it’s just not for me. I’ve been known to actually listen to some Imagination Movers while I’m alone in the car just so I can crank up the sound and listen with the mirror vibrating (not while little ears are in there, of course). Every Body Sing is actually one of the songs I like to do this with! :)

  • Groovy David says:

I admire both videos very much, and even though I do not have any true kid music experience, accept having my own children’s music band and blog, I vote for Billy Kelly.

Was that good Jeff. I tried to appear impartial! I tried!!!

  • Victoria C. says:

the imagination movers sure get(got) a lot of exposure from television but I’d be really curious to see if they could still win battling against a song that gets a lot of air play on kids place live, like “I think I’m a bunny” or “fits right in”. Can’t wait to see what other battles are planned!

  • Jeff says:

Victoria, I’m sure one of those battles will come up later on in the tourney…and you’re right, that will be extremely interesting to witness.

  • Jeff says:

    Hey Christina,
I totally understand, and appreciate your comment. Maybe you can check out The Not-Its, The Hipwaders, and even a band called The Boogers (more punk rock, but it’s loud and fast). All should please the kids while giving you more of the edge you enjoy in music.

    Cheers!

    Jeff

As usual, I’m a day late and a few dollars short. It seems I missed the vote this round. I would have voted for the Movers because we are a Mover family and have been for years. But I felt the need to comment on Billy Kelly’s song and video. When I was growing up, my mother’s brother, a WWII vet who served in Germany, lived with us. He erected a flag pole in our front yard complete with a stepped base made of brick and concrete encircled by flowers and a walkway that went from our front steps to a bridge that spanned the ditch between our (rather large) front yard and the road where our mailbox was. Every morning my uncle would raise the American flag on one side and the state flag on the other. I have very strong memories of helping him lower and correctly fold the flag into a triangle at dusk. Many mornings were spent sitting on the base waiting for the school bus to show up. And when my uncle passed away, his ashes were placed inside the flag pole at his request. He remains there to this day. The only reason I share this story is because should it somehow make it’s way back to Mr. Kelly, I would like him to know that even though he didn’t win this round, he did stir up some old memories in this 40-something mom and touched my heart.

  • Jeff says:

    Wendy,
That is beautiful. Thanks for sharing the story. I’ll make sure Kelly reads it.

Thanks for stopping by today (sorry you missed yesterday’s competition). Be sure to visit again tomorrow for another KidVid battle.

  • Michelle B. says:

I’m watching some of Billy’s videos on his website, http://www.thebillykellyshow.com. He’s quite charming and reminds me of how the Movers got started (and returning to…), grass roots, making their own songs, shows, videos. They’ve done quite well and still rely on grass roots. Perhaps he can get a grass roots movement of his own going. There is a market for the “homemade” stuff, rather than the “canned” junk that is being served up to kids out there. This was a tough fight here, Billy, but don’t give up. You have a future in this!!
