RIP Davy Jones

Most will always know Davy Jones as a Monkee, and rightfully so as the original TV band had a profound impact on the history of pop music and, later, the Shrek movie empire.  But there are at least a few youngsters, two of whom reside in my home, who were first introduced to this daydream believer as the funny guy who gave kindie great Billy Kelly his brand new haircut.

Mr. Jones died today at the age of 66.

    Your quick, Jeff. I just tweeted some of my favorite Monkees songs.

    I had my own encounter with The Monkees just BEFORE their TV show aired. I was riding my bike near home and saw what turned out to be the Monkeemobile on the street. I stopped and heard music from the nearby door. Looked in and there was this band playing music and in the middle of a photo session.

    I went in. The guys all came out and said hello and told me what they were doing. I asked if I could go home and get my camera. I took a few photos with my Kodak Instamatic and left with a great memory.

    Just recently, I found those photos and scanned and used them for a column…what a trip (that was what we said back then):
