New School Year, New School Lunches

The Bear isn’t a buyer.

She’s a packer most days but once a month (or so) when the cafeteria calendar promises an intersection of healthy and fun, she gets to punch in her PIN and be served by the lunch lady.

I’m pleased with this month’s selections, they show some creativity and thought.

For example, a little breakfast food in the midday:

  • Strawberry Pancakes w/ turkey sausage, diced potatoes and a juice cup
  • Egg & Cheese Wrap w/ home fries, fruit salad and Teddy Grahams.

As well as some dinner-worthy offerings:

  • Grilled Chicken Breast w/ mashed potatoes & gravy, mixed veggies and diced pears.
  • Italian Stromboli w/ garden salad, orange slices and vanilla pudding

I cannot be 100% certain of this (or anything these days) but those four are all new lunch combinations and all of them are at least interesting, a bit healthy or at least with some healthy-ish sides, and are creative in a way that I can’t recall public school lunches being.  And all for $2.20 with a milk. Tomorrow is the grilled chicken one.  Which means a one night break on food prep for me!  Off to watch a DVR-ed new episode of Inspector Lewis… weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

A healthy variety, with plenty of fruits and veggies. ~~My kids have a hard time with most green vegetables :) When shopping, I look for extra meal ideas that sneak in healthy options (like a veggie lasagna or casserole). …as the kids become more accustomed to the healthier foods they start to eat better on their own.

Also, I’m trying some more in-between meal snacks that have extra vitamins. The kids usually carry those to school in case they are hungry before or after lunch. …
